How to link your NIN (National Identification Number) to your MTN (SIM) phone number

The Nigerian Communication Commission NCC recently announced that it will deactivate all SIM cards that are not synchronized with a National Identification Number (NIN). According to the federal government, the reason for this is due to the rising insecurity in the country.

The deadline for this was initially slated for just 2 weeks which was supposed to end on the 30th of December 2020 after which defaulting SIM cards will be deactivated, but the senate has however asked for it to be extended till February 2020.

Nonetheless, MTN has just introduced a new online form which is expected to simplify the process of adding your NIN to your mobile number. The procedure is very simple and straightforward.

How to add your NIN to your MTN phone number
  • All you need to do is to visit mtnonline.com/nim.
  • Fill in the provided in the link with your name, phone number and NIN.
  • After that, just go ahead and submit.

  • You can also dial *785#

Keep in mind that according to MTN, this method is mainly for collation purpose and the status of the submitted NIN / NIMC is verified immediately. So you might still be required to show up for physical verification.
